Unboxed – Samsung Pixon 12

The world's first 12MP camphone, Samsung's Pixon 12, has just landed on our doormat. This pleases us greatly, because even though cramming a dozen megapixels onto a phone's sensor is ever so slightly bonkers, it's still got a strong shout for being the best camphone in the world.

The Pixon 12 looks remarkably similar to its 8MP predecessor – which means it's impressively small considering the tech inside. That includes a very bright Xenon flash with power LED for back-up, a 28mm wide-angle lens, GPS for geotagging photos and, the crowning glory, a 3.1in AMOLED screen.

Even if Samsung's slightly sluggish, widget-based UI slightly takes the shine off it, this crisp and bright display is the equal of that seen on the i8910HD, if slightly smaller.



There's only 150MB onboard storage, but you do get a 2GB microSD card (see below), and you can always splash out on a 16GB version to beef up the storage (which you'll need to do if you plan on taking lots of 12MP snaps).



The Pixon 12 feels like a camera in the hand, and you get plenty of shooting options – there's a smart auto mode for beginners (and the lazy), but you can also go manual and fiddle with white balance and ISO settings, or flick it into the 720x480 (30fps) video mode.



But there is one big miss which could prove crucial in its battle with Sony Ericsson's Satio – it runs Samsung's propietary OS rather than Symbian Series 60, which means less apps and tweakability for smartphone geeks like us.
